Course Excerpt: Obstetrical Positioning (PCUS109) September 20th 2026 (20-Sep-2026)

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in Pregnancy: Second & Third Trimester

Lab Session: September 20, 2026

Registration Deadline: August 17, 2026
Cost: $450

Important Registration Information:
After registering and submitting payment through the Alberta Association of Midwives, participants must complete the NAIT registration process. Please contact Jo Samu at jo.samu@alberta-midwives.ca to receive the required NAIT Registration Form and next steps.

This course introduces midwives and other pregnancy care providers to the practical application of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Designed for frontline clinicians, the program focuses on using bedside ultrasound to support timely clinical assessment and informed decision-making in maternity care.

Participants will gain a strong foundation in ultrasound principles, including how ultrasound works, safe equipment operation, image optimization, and appropriate transducer selection. The course also covers best practices for obtaining high-quality images while maintaining safe ultrasound standards.

Building on these fundamentals, learners will develop the practical skills needed to perform limited obstetrical POCUS examinations. Through guided instruction and hands-on learning, participants will learn to assess fetal position, recognize basic cross-sectional anatomy, and identify common normal and abnormal findings encountered during the second and third trimesters.

The course also emphasizes the appropriate use and limitations of bedside ultrasound, helping participants understand when POCUS can support clinical care and when referral for comprehensive diagnostic imaging is necessary.

The hands-on lab session will take place on September 20, 2026, where participants will apply their knowledge through supervised scanning practice and competency development.

Prior to the lab session, NAIT will provide enrolled participants with access to online course materials and mandatory pre-learning activities, which must be completed before attending the in-person lab.

Upon successful completion of the course and competency assessment, participants will receive a NAIT Microcredential and a Digital Badge, recognizing their achievement and allowing them to showcase their new skills professionally.

Eligibility:
In Alberta, sonography is a restricted practice. Enrollment is limited to regulated health professionals who are authorized to perform point-of-care ultrasound and can provide proof of eligibility as part of the NAIT registration process.

Lab Session: October 25th, 2026

Registration Deadline: September 21st, 2026

The hands-on lab session will take place on October 25, 2026, where participants will apply their knowledge through supervised scanning practice and competency development.
